Mindfulness, Optimism and Resilience for Perinatal Health and Equity (MORPHE) Trial

Principal Investigator

Traumatic birth experience (TBE) is an overlooked risk factor for postpartum mental health conditions, which contribute to significant social, medical, and economic burden and are disproportionately experienced by underserved and minoritized populations. To address this issue, Dr. Ayala will conduct a randomized clinical trial using a digital pregnancy-oriented mindfulness application to target a population with low dispositional optimism (DO) in early pregnancy. DO is a resilience mechanism associated with wide-ranging mental health benefits, but has never been targeted as a mechanism to impact perinatal mental health outcomes. The study aims to assess the feasibility and acceptability of the digital mindfulness intervention as well as the impact on DO, birth experience, and postpartum psychopathology in order to promote perinatal health equity.
