Dr. Joanne Wilkinson is an Associate Professor of Family Medicine at Brown University. She received her medical degree and completed residency in Family Medicine at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Dr. Wilkinson is a health disparities researcher with expertise in mixed methods research and populations marginalized due to medical mistrust and low health literacy. She completed a career development award from NCI to study mammography adherence in women with intellectual disabilities, which found that women with low health literacy appeared to learn more from video-based health education and led to the development of a pilot intervention to disseminate breast cancer screening information.
Dr. Wilkinson’s current research program is investigating the uptake of new diabetes therapies in urban Latinx patients and exploring the health behavior and engagement of patients with a history of trauma.
